28-year old Nirjala was the female category winner of MTB Himachal 2010. A champion mountain biker, she was born and raised in Patan in the Kathmandu Valley. When she was in her early 20s, Nirjala participated in a number of beauty contests, and although she never won a main title, she did receive various honours such as ‘Miss Talent,’ ‘Miss Personality’ and ‘Miss Friendship.’
Since dedicating her career exclusively to professional mountain bike racing, she has won numerous records in Nepal and was the first Nepali woman to ride from Lhasa, Tibet, to Kathmandu, and to compete in the Yak Attack, a cycling race around the Annapura Circuit in mid-Western Nepal. In March, Nirjala won second place in the Kanchenjunga Challenge, a nine-day race in Sikkim, India, and in April, she won a gold medal in the Nepali National Games. She is also a member of the Nepalese National team(Cycling).
Apart from all her cycling journeys, she loves to relax herself by indulging in painting and is also a national champion in making Mandala’s (quite similar to the Indian rangoli formations)
“I think, even if you are an athlete, you should be able to present yourself in a beautiful way. Being a lady, you should learn to be beautiful.”
Nirjala Tamrakar is the only serious female mountain biker in Nepal and trains almost exclusively with male teammates. “They know I can kick them. My appearance is like that, but when they start talking with me, they can easily make me a fool,” Nirjala says with a laugh.
So what does a female aspirant for an MTB event need to keep in mind, when competing at the highest level? “My daily workout regime consists of running, cycling and yoga. Yoga helps in keeping the mind fresh, and focused during a race. On Saturdays I go on long rides on my mountain bike. When it comes to preparing for a tournament, I follow a 2 week intense training pattern which primarily consists of only cycling and no weight training.”
What does she say about MTB Himachal?
“Such events are a great platform to meet riders from across the globe, and for staying in touch with the latest happenings in the world of adventure sports,” says Nirjala.
Well we too hope to see her take part in MTB Himachal 2011 as well.
Nice to know about you Nirjala, we share same passion and hope to see you this Sept in MTB!
